“Gambling, Prostitution & More” — South Korean Politician Sparks Massive Controversy With Comments About Seungri
A South Korean politician has come under fire after controversial comments he made regarding gambling, prostitution, and drunk driving resurfaced online. All of his remarks regarded none other than Seungri.
Kang Jun Wook, currently serving as Secretary for National Integration under the President’s Office, previously caused debate for supporting former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s calls for martial law in a past publication. However, it is his old social media post that is now sparking outrage.

According to a recent KBS report, Kang wrote on his personal SNS around 2020, debating punishment for gambling, prostitution, and drunk driving.
Watching the news about BIGBANG’s Seungri… People think gambling, prostitution, and drunk driving should be punished, but they never stop to think about why that is.
Gambling and prostitution don’t harm anyone else. They’re personal choices, and if any harm comes from them, it’s only to the person involved. The same goes for drunk driving. A drunk driving accident should be punished, but simply driving drunk should not be.
When it comes to drunk driving accidents, I fully support severe punishments. If it results in death, then life imprisonment or the death penalty should be considered.
But agreeing to punish someone even when they haven’t harmed anyone, or just because they might cause harm, is the same as refusing to take personal responsibility. It reflects a kind of slave mentality, where people find happiness in relying on a so-called benevolent state.
— Kang Jun Wook

In response to questions about the controversial post, Kang explained that it was meant to reflect “ideas from liberal political philosophy.”
The point I was trying to make is that we should strive for a society where people are responsible with the freedoms they enjoy, and where there’s mutual respect and consideration among individuals. Drunk driving accidents should absolutely be punished, since they harm others or their property. But punishing drunk driving in itself is contradictory. You can’t punish someone who hasn’t committed a crime.
— Kang Jun Wook about his post
Regardless of his explanation, his comments have sparked massive controversy and outrage among Korean netizens.

- “What do you mean it doesn’t harm anyone? Are you out of your mind??”
- “Wow, his brain is seriously messed up.”
- “Ha… everything’s falling apart, just look at this mess.”
- “???????”
- “Crazy piece of trash. I hope he gets hit hard by a drunk driver someday.”
