The case has become a meme arund the world.

Recently, the tale of China’s “Uncle Red” has been a hot topic on social media.

On July 5, police in Nanjing, China, shared that they arrested a 38-year-old man, last name Jiao, for spreading obscene material.  The mainland media reported that Jiao, who has been nicknamed “Uncle Red” and “Red Sister,” installed a hidden camera in his home and filmed himself having sex with male visitors while pretending to be a woman.

While there has already been fallout from the case for the victims of the unknown recordings, including the ending of relationships, the case is still developing.

In China, spreading obscene material carries a sentence of up to two years, while the knowing transmission of sexually transmitted infections or diseases (STIs/STDs) can have a punishment of 3-10 years in prison.

While it is almost certain that Jiao will face charges for spreading obscene material, the latter portion of his possible sentence requires time for the individuals who have stepped forward so far to get tested.

According to reports, 3 of the 237 men who have participated in the investigation tested positive for HIV.

Police have stated they cannot be sure if these positive test results can be directly connected to Jiao, but they have continued the public alarm sparked by the case. Many of Jiao’s clients were already in relationships, meaning transmission of STDs is a concern for those who did not come into contact with Jiao.
