Popular Soloist Leaves Empty Seat At Every Concert For Fan That Passed Away
It’s not uncommon for stars to show love to their fans — but what Liu Yuning has been doing quietly for the past six years is leaving fans in tears. The beloved Chinese singer-actor, best known as the lead vocalist of Modern Brothers, recently held concerts in Shenzhen. Among the sea of excited fans, one seat stood untouched.
Concertgoers noticed that Row 22, Seat 9 had been left completely empty. Instead of a fan, the chair held a bouquet of white roses and lilies — a quiet, beautiful tribute that quickly went viral across Chinese social media.

This wasn’t a random seat. It was reserved for one of Liu Yuning’s biggest fans, who tragically passed away before she ever got to see him perform live. The fan, whose fan club number was 229, had dreamed of attending his concert. But she passed away from illness in 2019 at just 17 years old. Heartbroken by her story, Yuning reserved Row 22, Seat 9 — matching her fan club number — at his first concert after her death. There, he made a promise to leave a seat for her at every concert.

And he’s kept that promise ever since. For six years, Row 22, Seat 9 remains empty at every concert. A bouquet of white flowers and a glowing light stick always rest on the chair — “so if the night gets too dark, she’ll still be able to find her way home,” one fan explained.

Fans say the white blooms represent pure love, while the silver ribbon tied around the bouquet stands for eternal remembrance. Even the florist who made the bouquet this year was moved. According to them, Yuning’s team placed the order 10 days ahead of the show and kindly asked if they could prepare a memorial bouquet. Every year on July 29, the anniversary of the fan’s passing, Yuning reportedly sends a bouquet in her memory and posts a tribute.
While Liu Yuning may be a superstar on stage, fans agree: it’s what he does quietly offstage that truly makes him one of a kind.
