According to reports by the Sixth Tone and Southern Metropolis Daily, the chatroom had over 103,000 members, who shared illegally taken hidden camera footage of women, couples, and even children. The victims were filmed in various locations, including subways, university dorms, fitting rooms, and even in their own homes.

In most cases, spy cameras were disguised as screws, power outlets, and other common household items. These cameras were sold to the chatroom members through a parallel underground marketplace.

The most disturbing discovery in this case has been the identity of the perpetrators. Most of the members who shared these illicit videos turned out to be closely related to the victims, including their ex-boyfriends, colleagues, or even family members.

A victim has come forward anonymously and revealed to the media that her ex-boyfriend, who is a Canadian citizen currently living in the US, shared her nude pictures and videos in a chatroom, along with her private information. Despite reporting the incident to both Chinese and US authorities, her case has remained stalled due to jurisdictional problems.

This infamous chatroom was initially formed in 2021 and was dismantled by the end of 2024 when it had over 310,000 members. However, it resurfaced in March this year and gained a massive following at a concerning pace. It operated openly, with even dedicated sub-groups such as “female classmates and colleagues,” “brides trying on dresses,” and “lingerie.”

According to Chinese legal experts, handling such cases of sexual violence is difficult in China, since the laws are not as strict when it comes ot voyeurism. Usually, penalties are extremely lenient, including short detentions or fines, unless the content is monetized.

Many victims of this infamous chatroom have come forward, expressing their willingness to fight this injustice till the end, encouraging others not to give up either. The nation has erupted into massive outrage, with citizens calling for strict punishments and tighter regulation of encrypted platforms such as Telegram.
