MBC K-Drama “To The Moon” Hit With Extreme Backlash, Shocking Teaser Accused Of Racism
MBC’s upcoming K-Drama To The Moon is already facing heavy criticism before its premiere.
The series’ newest teaser, released earlier this week, has sparked outrage from international fans who are calling out the network for cultural insensitivity.
The short preview, which runs under a minute, quickly drew attention on X (formerly Twitter) after viewers pointed out the use of inaccurate and offensive cultural symbols. Many criticized the production for carelessly blending elements from Middle Eastern and South Asian traditions, accusing the K-Drama of showing a lack of understanding and respect. The inclusion of a bindi, which belongs to Indian culture, was mentioned as a particularly glaring mistake.
don’t piss me offf … the fucking bindi as well, just mixing up two cultures. On top of that, continuously being disrespectful towards the middle eastern and south asian communities, give it a rest 😐 https://t.co/2HOU0ybwXt

Nobody in middle east wears bindi btw that's an Indian culture. At least educate yourself before showing anything. Our culture always gets disrespected by koreans again and again. It's tiring atp. https://t.co/EFRwbD3Hkx

Frustrated viewers expressed that these portrayals reflect a larger pattern of cultural stereotyping in Korean media. Some even referenced past controversies involving MBC, claiming the broadcaster has a history of ignoring accountability when it comes to issues of racism and representation.

To The Moon itself is described as a K-Drama that follows ordinary people struggling with financial instability, workplace injustices, and rising household debt in contrast to society’s emphasis on wealth and appearances. Starring Lee Sun Bin, Ra Mi Ran, and Jo A Ram, the series promises to explore themes of survival and aspiration as its characters embark on a unique journey.

Despite the premise, much of the conversation online has shifted away from the show’s story to the ongoing backlash over the teaser. Fans across different regions have called for MBC to address the criticism directly, urging the network to take responsibility and avoid repeating harmful stereotypes.
To The Moon is scheduled to air on MBC every Friday and Saturday from September 19 to October 25. Meanwhile, yet another K-Drama has sparked similar controversy among international viewers.
