Prosecutors Request 3 Year Prison Sentence For Top K-Drama Actress

The final sentence will be issued later.

Prosecutors have requested a three-year prison sentence for actress Hwang Jung Eum, on charges of embezzling 4.3 billion won from a company in which she held 100% ownership.

On August 21, during the final trial at the Jeju District Court’s Criminal Division 2, prosecutors asked the court to sentence Hwang to three years in prison for violating the act on embezzlement.

According to the indictment, around July 2022, Hwang borrowed 800 million under the name of an entertainment agency she owned, then transferred ₩700 million KRW (about $501,000 USD) from the agency’s account to her personal account under the guise of provisional payment, which she invested in cryptocurrency.

By October of that year, she had made a total of 13 such transfers, embezzling more than ₩4.20 billion KRW (about $3.00 million USD) out of ₩4.36 billion KRW (about $3.12 million USD) in company funds for cryptocurrency investments.

It was also revealed that she used embezzled funds to pay ₩4.44 million KRW (about $3,180 USD) in credit card bills and ₩1.00 million KRW (about $715 USD) in stock loan interest, citing property and local tax obligations.

At her first trial on May 15, Hwang admitted to all charges and requested a continuation to repay the damages. At that time, she had already repaid about ₩3.00 billion KRW (about $2.15 million USD). She later disposed of her personal assets and, on May 30 and June 5, fully reimbursed the remaining damages. Supporting documents were then submitted to the Jeju District Court.
