Iconic Male Idol Confesses He Had Vowed Never To Support His Parents Financially
A beloved second-generation boy group member recently shared a baffling story about how he started resenting his parents, who opposed his career choices.
The idol in question is Daesung, a member of one of the most popular K-Pop groups of all time, BIGBANG.
On December 9, KST, Daesung appeared as a guest on KBS 1TV’s Morning Yard, where he shared the story. Recalling his pre-debut days, he shared that he had only prepared for auditions at YG Entertainment because he was focused on Black music and hip-hop. He passed the audition on his first try and went through up to the third and final interview, securing his place as a trainee at the label. Daesung also recounted that then-CEO Yang Hyun Suk had personally told him that he chose him “for his smiling face,” rather than his singing.
Despite sailing through the auditions, Daesung revealed that he faced strong opposition from his parents before his debut. They tried to discourage him from becoming an idol, saying that they couldn’t support him as they lacked the financial means. The BIGBANG member recalled that as a young boy, he then made a vow to succeed just to show his parents that they were wrong. “I won’t give them a single penny of allowance. I’ll succeed on my own and eat chicken in front of them,” a young Daesung swore with resolution.
However, after BIGBANG’s debut, when they achieved massive success with “Lies,” Daesung said his parents finally had a change of perspective and even started bragging about him. Daesung also had a change of heart, and contrary to his initial resolve, he did give his parents pocket money consistently since receiving his first payout. “It’s been 20 years, and they still feel apologetic receiving it,” he shared.
