Korean Media Paints ENHYPEN Fans In A Bad Light Following Heeseung’s Departure
Following the announcement that ENHYPEN will continue as a six-member group after Heeseung’s departure, Korean media outlets have begun reporting on the situation — with some articles portraying parts of the fandom in a negative light.
On March 10, ENHYPEN’s agency Belift Lab confirmed that Heeseung would be leaving the group after discussions about the members’ individual futures and the group’s direction. The company stated that the decision was made after “in-depth conversations” and that they chose to respect Heeseung’s personal musical direction.
Heeseung also addressed fans directly through a handwritten message on the fan platform Weverse, explaining that the decision came after long deliberation and that he hoped to return to fans with a better version of himself.
Despite the statements from both the company and the artist, the news sparked strong reactions among fans. Some ENGENE questioned the circumstances surrounding the departure and began criticizing the agency online. Others organized actions to express their dissatisfaction, including plans for a truck protest in front of HYBE’s headquarters in Seoul.
Amid the ongoing debate, Korean media outlet Kyunghyang Sports published an article criticizing the situation.

In the piece, the outlet described the actions of some fans as excessive, arguing that demanding Heeseung continue group activities could infringe on the artist’s autonomy. The article was even titled “Heeseung Wants A Fresh Start… But Fans Throwing A Tantrum Are Blocking His Path.” The article also suggested that insisting on reversing the decision despite statements from the company, Heeseung, and the remaining members could be seen as overstepping the boundaries of fan influence. The report further noted that both the agency and the remaining ENHYPEN members had publicly stated they respect and support Heeseung’s decision and new beginning.
According to the article, industry insiders view idols pursuing their own musical direction after gaining experience as a natural progression in their careers.
“There’s really no tantrum quite like this one. As ENHYPEN member Heeseung officially announced his departure from the group and transition to a solo career in pursuit of his own musical vision, some members of the fandom have begun exercising excessive influence. Even though the decision was a voluntary one made with mutual respect between the artist and the remaining members, critics argue that fans demanding he continue group activities at all costs is an unreasonable “tantrum” that infringes on the artist’s autonomy.”

The outlet ultimately framed the controversy as a debate over the balance between fan expectations and an artist’s right to make independent decisions about their future.
“However, some ENHYPEN fans continue to demand Heeseung’s return to the group while spreading claims close to conspiracy theories. The remaining six ENHYPEN members also addressed the situation through the group’s official social media that day, saying, “Seeing fans worried and hurting is the most painful thing for us. We respect and support Heeseung’s decision and his new beginning.” In other words, the agency, the member leaving, and the remaining members have all described the decision as one reached after careful consideration, supporting a fresh start. Yet some fans are still pushing the narrative that it was a “forced removal by the company.” These fans have announced the truck protest while strongly demanding that Heeseung’s departure be reversed and that he continue group activities alongside his solo career.”
Industry insiders say that criticizing a lack of communication from the agency is one thing, but treating an unverified theory about forced expulsion as fact and staging protests based on it is a completely different issue. They argue that when an adult artist makes an independent decision for their own musical vision, fans attempting to reverse that decision through collective action goes beyond legitimate consumer rights and becomes an overreach.
The article has since sparked further discussion online, with netizens debating both the media’s characterization of fans and the broader situation surrounding Heeseung’s departure.
