The JYP Entertainment girl group had a massive run with their last full album, Blue Valentine. The lead single topped the charts for months, and their world tour sold out. Safe to say, expectations were high going into their next project.

The next project is Heavy Serenade, their fifth mini-album, dropping soon. As part of promotions, they dropped the pre-release single on April 28.

And the reactions to it have been mixed. A post about the track went viral on Korean forum Pann, where netizens weren’t holding back.

While the original poster was clearly a fan of the song…

It’s an experimental song, and it makes you realise that experimental music isn’t about releasing some total flop and calling it bold. This is what an actually experimental song sounds like. It’s genuinely insane (in the best way).

But the comments told a different story.

  • “I have never once thought an NMIXX song was good.”
  • “It’s honestly such trash, and they’re out here calling it experimental lmao”
  • “It’s just very small-company-idol energy”
  • “A song I’ll listen to once and never again”
  • “Love it”

Whether the backlash carries over to the mini album remains to be seen. However, NMIXX has never exactly played it safe with their sound, so divisive reactions aren’t new territory for them.
