“Ktown Cowboys” feature film to open at SXSW Film Festival
It was just announced that feature film Ktown Cowboys has been selected as one the films for the “Narrative Spotlight” category for the upcoming South by Southwest film festival, better known as SXSW. The film will premiere at the festival this March in Austin, Texas.
Based on the viral web series of the same name, the film features follows the bromance of five legendary partiers as they go out for one last night of “Ktown” fun through which each character experiences dynamic growth before they “throw it down” one last time just like the old days. With the ever vivacious Koreatown as its setting, there’s no telling what crazy adventures the five characters will experience.
The film brings back the main cast of the web series for one crazy story and is directed by Daniel (DPD) Park (creative director for hip-hop artists Far East Movement) and written by Danny Cho (Mad TV, Parks and Recreation) and Brian Chung. In addition to the dynamic cast, famous Asian-American actors including Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Community), Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hawaii Five-0), Steve Byrne (Sullivan & Sons), and Simon Rhee (Best of the Best) will appear in the film as well.
Park said, “It’s an honor to be selected for South by Southwest. This is my first feature film, so getting that recognition from such a prestigious festival is validation for all the hard work the cast and crew and entire team put into making this a reality.” Cho said, “This started out as a web series and now to see it as a feature film is pretty crazy. I look forward to showing this to a live audience.”
To prepare fans for the transition from the computer screen to the big screen, the two have partnered up to create a second web series titled Ktown Footnotes which as Park says, “because the two projects are so different, Danny and I created Footnotes as a set of transmedia stories that will bridge the series to the movie.” Cho added, “What’s cool about Footnotes is that each episode is a stand alone comedy short. It’s funny on its own. You don’t need to watch the movie to understand Footnotes, and you don’t need to watch Footnotes to get the movie. But when people do see the movie, Footnotes will add a richer understanding of the characters.”
The already popular web series reached an even bigger audience as the two creators released weekly Ktown Footnotes since it peaked many new viewers’ interests. The fan base for the series has grown and many are anticipating the upcoming release of the feature film.
Ktown Cowboys was executive produced by Ken Jeong and Sam Chi, and produced by Brian Chung, Greg Bishop and Daniel Sollinger. Chris Sablan of Original Artists’ is managing distribution sales rights.
