11-Year-Old Actress Cast As 28-Year-Old’s Bride In C-Drama, Sparking Outrage

“What the f*ck is wrong with people?”

A Chinese short drama is facing severe backlash from netizens due to its controversial casting and storyline.

Forced a Lucky Koi to Marry the Living Yanluo, the Prime Minister’s Mansion’s Luck Is Completely Destroyed is a historical short drama starring Dora Liu Xingchen, an 11-year-old child actress who was cast opposite Jin Wang, a 28-year-old actor.

The series is based on a novel about a bride who marries her husband at age 7 and gives birth at age 15. Both Chinese and international netizens have reportedly condemned the C-Drama, finding the combination of its plot and Dora’s casting very disturbing, regardless of whether or not Lucky Koi is rooted in history.

The series does not contain any explicit romance scenes, and the male lead–who gets married due to a royal decree–intends to have a platonic relationship with his bride. Even so, viewers found the interactions between Dora and Jin, such as holding hands and Jin carrying Dora, immensely uncomfortable, given the context.

Furthermore, the characters’ marriage doesn’t remain platonic forever. In the series, Dora’s character is 15 years old when she marries, as opposed to seven in the novel. In the final episode, which takes place seven years later, an older actress takes over the role of Dora’s character, who has given birth to a son by this time.
