In Guangdong, China, a man was filmed kneeling before his wife and tenderly kissing her as she cradled their newborn child. Overwhelmed with emotion, the wife, seated in a wheelchair, could be seen clutching a bouquet of flowers while wiping away tears. She had just given birth to their fourth child: their first son, after having three daughters.

In an online post followed by an audience of 67,000 followers, according to South China Morning Post, the husband sang his wife’s praises. He also expressed his gratitude by giving his wife a monetary present: approximately $1,342 USD.

This is the fourth time you have risked your life for me. Thank you for making my life more complete. Three daughters and a son form the Chinese word ‘good.’ Wife, you have worked hard.

— Husband

In the video, the woman seems touched by her husband’s gesture, but the public’s response has been nearly as positive. Some Chinese netizens accused the man of being selfish and putting his wife through the pain of childbirth repeatedly just so that he could have his son.

The couple, however, who has been married for 13 years, refuted these claims. The husband said he often kneels in gratitude to his wife, and the wife stated, “Public opinion does not concern me. My husband’s kneeling isn’t a performance for others. He understands my sacrifice.”

Furthermore, their pregnancy was unexpected, not planned, coming just 10 months after the birth of their third daughter. The man also gave his wife monetary gifts for the births of their first three children.
