A Beginner’s Guide To SEVENTEEN: Fun Facts About Each Of The Members Any Carat Should Know
SEVENTEEN has been taking the K-Pop world by storm over the last couple of years, and given how talented all of the members are and how amazing their music is, it’s certainly well-deserved! They just released their ninth mini-album, Attacca, with the title song “Rock With You”, and Carats are absolutely loving this comeback — for obvious reasons!
If you’re new to the SEVENTEEN fandom and want to get to know each of the thirteen members a little better, the following list should get you started on the right track! Here are fun facts about each of the members that any Carat should know.
1. S.Coups
Born on August 8, 1995 (making him a Leo) in Daegu, S.Coups (full name Choi Seungcheol) is 26 years old and the leader of both the hip hop sub-unit of SEVENTEEN, as well as the leader of SEVENTEEN as a whole! His other positions in the group are as the main rapper and sub-vocalist. He’s 178cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is INFP.
His stage name, S.Coups can be broken down into two parts. The “S” part of his name can stand for both “Seungcheol” and “SEVENTEEN”, and the “Coups” part of his name is taken from the term “coup d’état“, which is a phrase used to define a takeover or sudden advantage over a rival/government/etc., usually by a small force. So together, his stage name basically stands for SEVENTEEN having success over their rivals!
As far as siblings go, even though he’s the leader of SEVENTEEN, S.Coups is actually the only member of the group that has an older brother! His name is Seungmin, and he was born in 1993, making him 2 years older than the idol.
He started as a trainee at Pledis Entertainment all the way back in 2010, and was actually supposed to debut with NU’EST, but ended up debuting with SEVENTEEN in 2015 instead. He wants to be an actor in the future, has a black belt in Taekwondo, and his ideal type is “someone who can cook well and who eats a lot”.
2. Jeonghan
Born on October 4, 1995 (making him a Libra) in Hwaseong, Jeonghan (full name Yoon Jeonghan) is 26 years old. He’s in the vocal sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead vocalist and visual. He’s 178cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is ISFJ.
Jeonghan is one of the members of SEVENTEEN that uses his real name as his stage name. You can break down his name into “Jeong”, which means “clear, pure, or innocent”, and “Han”, which means “a country”. Together, the two parts can mean “a clean Milky Way”!
Jeonghan is one of a couple members of SEVENTEEN that has a younger sister. She was born in 1999, making her 4 years younger than Jeonghan.
He became a trainee at Pledis Entertainment in 2013 and trained for about two years, and he’s also skilled at playing the bass guitar! He has said that between dating someone older or younger, he would prefer to date someone older, and his ideal type is “someone who loves SEVENTEEN and buys their albums.”.
3. Joshua
Born on December 30, 1995 (making him a Capricorn) in Los Angeles, Joshua (full name Hong Jisoo/Joshua Hong) is 25 years old. He’s in the vocal sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead vocalist and visual. He’s 177cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is ENFJ.
Joshua is another member of SEVENTEEN that uses his real name as his stage name! “Joshua” is a name taken from the Bible, and he is known for being proudly Christian. He’s also the oldest member of SEVENTEEN that is an only child!
Joshua also joined Pledis Entertainment in 2013, and he’s a very skilled guitarist as well! He loves anime, can speak five different languages, and his ideal type is “someone who is kind”.
4. Jun
Born on June 10, 1996 (making him a Gemini) in Shenzhen, China, Jun (full name Wen Junhui) is 25 years old. He’s in the performance sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead dancer and sub-vocalist. He’s 182cm (or 6′) tall, and his MBTI type is INFP.
While his stage name is simply part of the idol’s full name, his full name can be broken down into parts with their Chinese meanings: “Wen”, his surname, means “good in study”, “Jun” means “good-looking”, and “Hui” means “can be better/can improve more”.
He’s one of several members of the group that has a younger brother. He’s a decade younger than Jun, born in 2006, and his name is Yang Yang!
He moved to South Korea to become a trainee in 2012, and previous to that, he was also a child actor in China! He’s a skilled martial artist, can play the piano, and his ideal type is “someone who looks pure”.
5. Hoshi
Born on June 15, 1996 (making him a Gemini) in Namyangju, Hoshi (full name Kwon Soonyoung) is 25 years old. He’s the leader of the performance sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the main dancer, lead vocalist, and sub-rapper. He’s 178cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is INFP.
The stage name “Hoshi” can have a couple different meanings, depending on what language you’re using! The word “Hoshi” in Japanese means “star”, and in Korean, the word is short for “Horangi-ui Siseon” (호랑이의 시선), which means “a tiger’s gaze”. He has an older sister, who is a year older than him, born in 1995.
Hoshi became a trainee at Pledis Entertainment in 2011, and he’s also known to choreograph most of SEVENTEEN’s dance routines. He has a black belt in Taekwondo, is a huge SHINee fan, and his ideal type is “someone who is fragrant and likes him”.
6. Wonwoo
Born on July 17, 1996 (making him a Cancer) in Changwon, Wonwoo (full name Jeon Wonwoo) is 25 years old. He’s in the hip hop sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead rapper and sub-vocalist. He’s 182cm (or 6′) tall, and his MBTI type is INFJ.
Wonwoo is another member who uses his real name as his stage name. His name can be broken down into two parts: “Won”, which means “round”, and “Woo”, which means “help, assist, aid”. Together, his name means “helping people with a rounded heart”.
He’s also another member of SEVENTEEN that has a younger brother. His name is Bohyuk, born in 1998 (making him two years younger than Wonwoo), and he is actually a former fashion model!
He also became a trainee in 2011, and has been voted by other members of the group as the cleanest member. He wears prescription glasses, has said that he’s a warm person despite his “cold” eyes, and his ideal type is “someone who suits him well”.
7. Woozi
Born on November 22, 1996 (making him a Sagittarius) in Busan, Woozi (full name Lee Jihoon) is 24 years old. He’s the leader of the vocal sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead vocalist and producer. He’s 165cm (or 5’5″) tall, and his MBTI type is INFJ.
Woozi’s stage name came from a phrase that company staff members call him by! Since his real name is Lee Jihoon, the staff would call him “Uri Jihoon”, or “our Jihoon”. He condensed this into “Woozi”, taking the “U” and the “Ji” from the term. He’s also the second member of SEVENTEEN that doesn’t have any siblings!
Woozi also became a trainee in 2011, and prior to that, he was trained in classical music for a long time. He’s an incredibly talented producer and composer, working on both SEVENTEEN’s songs as well as those for other groups. Finally, his ideal type is “a girl who is bright and friendly”.
8. DK
Born on February 18, 1997 (making him an Aquarius) in Suji, DK (full name Lee Seokmin) is 24 years old. He’s in the vocal sub-unit, and his positions in the group is as the main vocalist. He’s 179cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is INFP.
DK, or Dokyeom, has a sweet meaning behind his stage name. “Do” means “a path or road” and “Kyeom” means “multitasker”, so together the meanings create “be a multitasker in various fields”, which basically means he’s a multi-talented person! His real name, Lee Seokmin, has a meaning of “to have a big existence like a precious gem”.
He has an older sister in his family, who was born in 1994, making 3 years older than the idol.
He became a trainee in 2012, and is known as the mood-maker or “happy virus” of the group due to his bright and cheerful personality! He went to the same school at the same time as NCT‘s Jaehyun (but didn’t talk to him because DK thought Jaehyun was too handsome), was cast as King Arthur recently in the musical Excalibur, and his ideal type is “a girl with long dark hair, has aegyo, and has long slender legs”.
9. Mingyu
Born on April 6, 2997 (making him an Aries) in Anyang, Mingyu (full name Kim Mingyu) is 24 years old. He’s in the hip hop sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead rapper, sub-vocalist, visual, and face of the group. He’s 187cm (or 6’2″) tall, and his MBTI type is ENFJ.
Mingyu is yet another member that uses his real name, Kim Mingyu, for his stage name! “Min” means “precious stone/gem” and “Gyu” means “star”, so his name can be translated to mean “a star-like stone”.
He is also another member of SEVENTEEN that has a younger sister. She’s four years younger than him, born in 2001, and her name is Minseo!
Mingyu became a trainee in 2011, and enjoys cleaning and vacuuming the group’s living space. Before debut, he appeared in NU’EST’s “Face” music video as well as Hello Venus‘s “Venus” MV, is the tallest member of SEVENTEEN, and his ideal type is “a girl who is tall, kind-hearted, and easy-going”.
10. The8
Born on November 7, 1997 (making him a Scorpio) in Haicheng, China, The8 (full name Xu Minghao) is 23 years old. He’s in the performance sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the lead dancer, sub-rapper, and sub-vocalist. He’s 178cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is INFJ.
The8’s stage name has symbolism in Chinese culture. The number “8” is a lucky number for their culture, and when laid on its side, becomes the infinity symbol. Because of this, his stage name can mean “infinite luck”. He’s also the third and final member of SEVENTEEN that is an only child!
He left China to become a trainee at Pledis Entertainment in 2013, and previous to that, he was a skilled b-boy in China. He’s skilled in the martial art Wushu, is a huge fashionista, and his ideal type is “someone who is cute and kind”.
11. Seungkwan
Born on January 16, 1998 (making him a Capricorn) in Busan (but raised in Jeju), Seungkwan (full name Boo Seungkwan) is 23 years old. He’s in the vocal sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the main vocalist and face of the group. He’s 174cm (or 5’9″) tall, and his MBTI type is ENFP.
Boo Seungkwan also uses his real name for his stage name. “Seung” means “victory/success”, and “Kwan” means “generous, understanding”, so together, it means to be a “generous successor”.
Seungkwan is the only member of SEVENTEEN that has two siblings: Both older sisters! Their names are Jinseol and Sojeong, born in 1989 and 1993 respectively, making them 9 and 5 years older than the idol.
Seungkwan became a trainee with Pledis Entertainment in 2012, and before then was offered the opportunity to join JYP Entertainment, but he declined! Like DK, he’s a huge mood maker for the group, enjoys taking care of other members of the group, and his ideal type is “an easy-going girl with big eyes and is like a friend to him”.
12. Vernon
Born on February 18, 1998 (making him an Aquarius) in New York, Vernon (full name Choi Hansol/Vernon Chwe) is 23 years old. He’s in the hip hop sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the main rapper, sub-vocalist, visual, and face of the group. He’s 178cm (or 5’10”) tall, and his MBTI type is ISFP.
Vernon, like Joshua, has both American and Korean names, and also chose to use his American name, Vernon Chwe, for his stage name.
Vernon is the final member of the group that has a younger sister, who is arguably one of the most well-known SEVENTEEN siblings! Her name is Sofia (Korean name Hangyeol), and she was born in 2004, making her 6 years younger than Vernon.
He became a trainee in 2012, and some of his role models include Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and David Bowie. He’s also a big Harry Potter fan, was voted by other members as the shyest of the group, and his ideal type is “someone his heart can connect with”.
13. Dino
Born on February 11, 1999 (making him an Aquarius) in Iksan, Dino (full name Lee Chan) is 22 years old. He’s in the performance sub-unit, and his positions in the group are as the main dancer, sub-rapper, sub-vocalist, and maknae. He’s 174cm (or 5’9″) tall, and his MBTI type is ENFJ.
His stage name is short for “dinosaur”, because he wants to be a dinosaur that dominates the stage! He also has a younger brother in his family, who is 2 years younger than Dino (born in 2001), and his name is reportedly Geon or Junggeon.
