4th Gen Idol’s Apology After Shocking Racist Texts Sparks Even More Controversy

Korean netizens have remained suspicious.

Xdinary Heroes member Junhan has been under fire after a series of troubling messages sent to fans sparked accusations of racism, misinformation, and support for eugenics. His attempt to apologize has only intensified the backlash.

The controversy began on June 28, when Junhan responded to fans on the Bubble platform, initially engaging in a conversation about scientific research.

However, things took a concerning turn when he wrote that Black people are better at music and hearing because they supposedly have “more cells in their ears.” He continued by floating the idea of combining “qualities” from different racial groups, specifically Black, White, and Asian/Indian people — statements that many immediately connected to eugenics, a discredited and racist ideology rooted in selective breeding.

His unexpected texts have triggered a strong backlash from K-Pop fans online.

Due to this backlash, Junhan shared a handwritten apology on X (formerly Twitter) through the group’s official account, acknowledging his lack of knowledge and expressing regret. But the apology has sparked even more frustration online.

Hello, this is Junhan from Xdinary Heroes.

First of all, I sincerely apologize for the hurt and discomfort my careless remarks have caused many people.

I’ve come to realize that what I said reflected a biased perspective, and I am deeply reflecting on it. I want to offer my sincerest apologies once again to those who were hurt or offended by my lack of historical knowledge, social awareness, and sensitivity.

From now on, I will continue to learn and grow so that I can act based on accurate understanding and knowledge.

This incident has made me more aware of the weight of my words and actions, and I will be more cautious and responsible in everything I do.

Once again, I offer my deepest apologies.

— Junhan

A post on popular Korean forum TheQoo went viral with more than 30,000 views about Junhan’s apology. The comments were full of criticism and disappointment.

  • “A Korean supporting eugenics… And trying to teach that ideology through Bubble messages… Ignorant and harmful.”
  • “Just from the handwriting alone, lol.”
  • “Wow… there are actually people defending eugenics? What’s next, praising the Nazis and Japanese war criminals too? Ugh. There’s a reason people react so strongly to eugenics.”
  • “The problem isn’t just a slip of the tongue, it feels like he’s expressing a belief he’s held for a long time. That’s what makes it feel real and serious.”

On the other hand, international fans have been more accepting of his apology.
