Amber Opens Up About Her Past Relationships And Love
In a video interview, f(x)‘s Amber opened up about her past relationships, and talked about how she “sucks at them”.
She spoke about the songs in her mixtape, “Rogue Rouge” and how they reflect her experiences with love and the entertainment industry. Amber’s track “Right Now”, featuring Gen Neo, took a long time for the two to write the lyrics for. Amber revealed it was because they both find relationships difficult, and putting their feelings into a song was difficult.
Yeaaah, love sucks!!! That song’s been sitting with me for five years. Funny story about that song, the producer Gen, who is my singing coach and basically my mentor for everything, he actually wrote this song in 2011 or 2012 and he said he was going to trash it. We actually had to change the song three to four times before it is what it is today.
He didn’t want to be on it, but I said, ‘You have to be on it! Everyone thinks we sound so good together.’ We originally recorded the demo to [f(x) song] “Goodbye Summer” together. But me and Gen both suck at relationships, and I’m very cautious when it comes to relationships.

Amber revealed that she approaches relationships with serious intentions, which has left her with heartache in the past.
I’ll say, I’m picky. I’m a very all-in personality, and that’s the reason I am picky because if I date you that means I want to marry you, I want to spend my life with you. I remember it took me five years to get over one of my exes. It’s not something we talk about a lot in the industry and it’s not something people see, but I’ve been an emotional wreck. I’m a softie. But when I get broken up with, I learn a lot about myself.

She first said “I love you” to someone when she was 16, but in the 9 years since, her definition of love changed as she matured.
Define ‘love’? The reason why I ask is because after one of my relationships, I was like ‘This is it’ and I held onto it for a very long time until I found the next contestant – or I should say next victim, that’s a fun way to say it. But I think, every time I’m in a relationship the definition of love changes. The first time I said ‘I love you’ to someone, I was 16. Um, yeah, it sucked. But the definition of love changes and it changes from 16 to 25.

In the past, she had briefly opened up to Yoo Hee Yeol about her ex-boyfriend and what kind of boyfriend she wanted in the future.
I had a boyfriend. Just one, a long time ago. I’m an active person so I want a boyfriend who can enjoy sports with me. I like basketball, skateboarding, and basically everything [active].

Her song “Get Over It”, the first track on the mixtape, is about where she’s at now professionally, but also personally — she wants everyone to get over it and get on with it, and to celebrate differences and all kinds of love.
That whole song was basically, ‘We’re people, we all have opinions, we’ll agree to disagree, we’ll disagree to agree,’ so instead of being so focused on our differences, let’s just get over it. A lot of people don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, whether it’s the public or whether it’s family, friends, co-workers or whatnot, everybody has their opinion and in the end, no one’s right and no one’s wrong. I think that’s pretty cool…

The “Get Over It” music video was produced in partnership with Koreaboo Studios and Team Pineapple. Amber said the video spotlights the people around her, who helped her become the person she is today.
[There’s] an array of people who have been with me on this journey. I’m so thankful to everyone who was with me, they really believed in me and made me work harder. But I chose [Get Over It] to be the opening song because that song is me right now. I’m all sorts of things: I’m cool, I’m a brat, but you’re a brat too! But I wanted the video to tie the journey together and spotlight those people.
