BLACKPINK’s Lisa Spills On The Difficult Difference Performing Solo Versus In A Group

“It was a huge burden.”

Rolling Stone heralds BLACKPINK‘s Lisa as having a fierce presence on stage where her eyes are “alight with ferocity, as she raps, dances, and sings, [as] an unfaltering symbol of the swag and confidence that’s BLACKPINK’s calling card.”

Lisa is always bringing her all to her stage, whether in captivating group performances…

Or her solo dance performance videos.

And, of course, there’s no denying the powerful energy that Lisa brought to her solo debut stages of “LALISA,” captivating viewers with her incredible stage presence.

But despite the confident presence that Lisa always brings to the stage, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Lisa admits that there is a drastic difference between performing in a group versus by herself.

What was it like to go solo, standing onstage alone?

-Rolling Stone interview question

Lisa admits that she was incredibly nervous about performing on stage alone.

[I was] nervous. Very nervous.

Lisa shares that when she is performing with her members, she can receive energy and support from them, which helps all of them give the best performance possible.

Normally when the four of us are together – let’s say [Rosé] gives her 100 percent. Then the rest of us can feel it onstage. And unconciously I also get this energy of ‘Shoot, I need to do more too.’ We boost each other in that way.

And, of course, Lisa can’t get that same level of support and that inspiration for her own energy when she is performing by herself.

But if I stand alone, it’s different. I can’t take energy from anybody. It just has to come from me.

-Lisa

And not only does Lisa not have her typical source of energy, but she’s aware that she has to give her absolute all every time since she is the only person her fans will be fixated on.

And the fans just watch only me. It was a huge burden.

But Lisa quickly acknowledges that while it is difficult to perform alone, she still has to overcome her nervousness and give the best performances possible for her fans.

But what can you do? This is my solo! I just practice and monitor myself a lot.
