“1st Ever” — K-Pop GRAMMY Nominees Make History Amid Debate Over Largest Snubs

The large and viral account @PopBase shared congratulations for Rosé being the “first Korean soloist” to get a nomination, but it sparked a major debate.

Following the tweet, many accounts started correcting the post, explaining that Jo Sumi was the first Korean solo singer to get nominated and win an award in 1993, sharing it was for the “Best Opera Recording.”

Yet, fans quickly hit back at this, claiming that Jo Sumi won a GRAMMY but was part of an ensemble while Rosé is the first Korean solo act to be nominated.

Yet, it also sparked reactions as many believed that BTS and HYBE had pushed forward the idea of the group being the first Korean nominees at the GRAMMYs when it was more appropriate to specify it as K-Pop. While some ARMYs defended the fact that it was said as the first “K-Pop” stars, many hit back, pointing out that many articles and tweets specified “Korean.”

There has always been a discourse surrounding K-Pop and the GRAMMYs.
