On September 6 (KST), Wednesday, the Global Citizen Festival announced that BTS member Jungkook will be joining the list of its 2023 headliners.
Jungkook will be joining acts like Anitta, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers as a co-headliner and take the stage on September 23 in New York City.
The music festival is hosted by the international advocacy organization Global Citizen, with the aim to call on government, corporate, and philanthropic leaders to defeat poverty, demand equity, and defend the planet. The event is scheduled to coincide with the UN General Assembly to ensure the highest possibilities of getting policy and financial commitments from world leaders. The tickets to the event are free and can be attained through points earned by taking various actions to fight extreme poverty, such as signing petitions, calling local political representatives, participating in challenges, and more.
In 2021, BTS performed from Seoul as part of Global Citizen Live, which featured 65 artists performing across 6 continents to call for urgent action to defeat poverty and protect the planet.
This year, Jungkook will be performing solo in New York City’s Central Park. Apart from him, the only other K-Pop act in the lineup is Stray Kids. Artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Conan Gray, D-Nice, and Sofia Carson have also been announced to join the event as performers. Additional celebrities set to participate in this year’s campaign include Busy Philipps, Bill Nye, Carmelo Anthony, Common, Gayle King, Jordan Fisher, and Sophia Bush, among others.
The BTS member expressed his excitement over participating in this event through a press release.
I’m so thrilled to join this year’s Global Citizen Festival as a headliner!…The festival sheds ligh on important issues and drives action and I’m happy to take part in it. I can’t wait to perform in front of many people at the Great Lawn in Central Park.
