BTS Are “National Heroes,” Says Tottenham Hotspur Soccer Star Son Heung Min

Son Heung Min is one of South Korea’s biggest global athletes, but he’s still in awe of BTS.

In a new interview with British entertainer CHUNKZ, world-famous South Korean footballer Son Heung Min—who currently plays for English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur—named BTS national heroes.”

29-year-old Son Heung Min has been playing for foreign soccer (football) clubs since the age of 16, when he moved to Germany to join Hamburger SV. In 2015, he was signed to Tottenham Hotspur for a staggering £22 million GBP (around $30.2 million USD), making him the most expensive Asian player in history. However, despite his overseas career, he’s never lost touch with Korean culture.

Alongside being close friends with Parasite actor Park Seo Joon and Korean R&B artist Crush, Son Heung Min is also a fan of BTS. In a new interview for Pro:Direct Soccer on YouTube, the star athlete actually named the group “national heroes.”

Son Heung Min was shocked when British interviewer CHUNKZ revealed he’s actually a fan of BTS himself, but if anything, it’s an even greater testament to BTS’s global success. “Literally, I’m a big fan of BTS,” Son Heung Min told CHUNKZ, going on to explain just what makes the group so special to him.

I think [BTS are] also national heroes.

When CHUNKZ agreed that he says how popular BTS are on social media, Son deemed the feat “incredible.” He went on to say that what BTS have done for Korea makes him “really proud and really happy,” adding that he’s “grateful” for their amazing success in bringing Korean culture to the spotlight.

I’m grateful that they are here. They make South Korea bigger and bigger.

Ultimately, the soccer star says, “I’m a big fan of them; I hope they keep doing well.” Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Son Heung Min has gushed over how proud he is of BTS. In an interview for Volvo Korea earlier this year, Son expressed how BTS is making history in the UK too. He went on to open up about how he also sees them as a support system.

They’ve become somewhat of a support system for me, helping me overcome the difficulties of living abroad. I appreciate them and I’m their biggest fan.

And BTS have also shown support for Son Heung Min too. During their show at Wembley Stadium in 2019, RM wore a “SON” cap on stage and showed it off to the camera.

Here’s hoping these mutual fanboys get to become close friends one day!
