EXO’s Kai Exposes “Terrifying” SM Entertainment Treatment
EXO’s Kai opened up about the strict training environment at SM Entertainment during a recent appearance on You Quiz on the Block.

Despite being with the company for 20 years, Kai admitted he still feels nervous under the watchful eye of Yoon Hee Jun, head of SM’s Idol Development Center.

Known for her tough evaluations, Yoon keeps trainees on edge to prepare them for high-pressure performances. She shared that she would go out of her way to scare them.
I don’t only wear black, but to make trainees feel a sense of tension, you have to instill a bit of fear. If they learn not to be nervous in any situation, they won’t be nervous on any stage.
Artists always say that singing and dancing in front of me is scarier than any other stage.
— Yoon Hee Jun

Kai recalled how, as a young trainee, he faced weekly assessments and harsh feedback, even after being selected as EXO’s center.
This is my 20th year since joining the company. Back then, we had evaluations every Sunday. Every time, she would say, ‘Get it together. Do you think that pitch is correct?‘

He shared how the mere presence of Yoon at the door could make trainees tense, prompting them to anxiously check if she was coming.
We used to keep watch to see whether she was coming or not…

Fans have reacted with a mix of sympathy and respect for the discipline required during trainee years.
