Recently, the idol held three back-to-back concerts in Hong Kong as a part of his Übermensch World Tour. During one of the shows, when he came down from the stage to interact with some fans in the front row, one of them threw a bunch of fake money at him, leaving the idol visibly startled.

The action has since sparked a huge backlash online. Many pointed out that throwing money at performers was often seen as a disrespectful gesture in Korean and other Asian cultures, while throwing fake money was even worse. In many cultures, including Korea, China, Vietnam, and Taiwan, fake currency often resembles joss paper, or “hell money” used in funeral rites to send offerings to the deceased. Hence, throwing it at a living person is seen as highly offensive and ominous.

According to reports, the fan who threw the fake money at G-Dragon later apologized on Xiaohongshu, explaining that they did it just as a playful gesture without fully understanding the cultural implications behind it.

Despite the apology, the debates around such fan behavior continued on social media, with many pointing out that there was a widespread problem of a lack of etiquette among G-Dragon’s concert-goers.

Meanwhile, G-Dragon’s concerts also saw some controversial signs that sparked outrage from netizens. Read more about it here:
