Hanyu posted a heartfelt message on his official Twitter account, thanking his fans for their continuous support during his 24-year-long ice skating career and promising to continue with his sport in the future as well.

I, Yuzuru Hanyu, have decided to get married… I’ll continue to spend my life with everyone who has supported me, along with figure skating, living life, and moving forward with everything I’ve got.

The post, however, made no mention of the identity of his partner, and neither did it mention when the ceremony might happen.

The 28-year-old two-time Olympic champion retired from competitive figure skating after a fourth-place finish at the Beijing Winter Games in 2022, narrowly missing out on capturing a third straight Olympic gold. Often dubbed the “Ice Prince,” Hanyu has now become a pro figure skater, organizing multiple solo shows and selling out arenas across countries.

Growing up in Sendai, Japan, Hanyu faced terribly disastrous situations when the 2011 Tsunami devastated his hometown. He went on to win the gold medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics only three years later, becoming the inspiration for many survivors. In 2018, he achieved a historic repeat at the Pyeongchang Games, becoming the first skater to successfully defend his gold medal in the event in the last 66 years. He became the youngest recipient of the Japanese government’s People’s Honor Award at age 23 that same year.

A six-time national champion and winner of four straight Grand Prix Finals since 2013, Hanyu has solidified his status as a legendary figure in the sport and earned himself a dedicated fanbase. He is also fondly known by K-Pop fans for his shared love for the music. He has especially shown love to K-Pop giant BTS, performing to their songs at his shows and even covering their dance routines!

While fans have sent their good wishes to Hanyu and his partner on this occasion, many also found it amusing how the announcement merely touched upon the subject of marriage and was more focused on skating and his gratefulness to fans. Japanese netizens had their share of light-hearted fun with the news, trending tags asking if he is marrying his sport after all.

We wish the beloved Ice Prince a very happy life ahead!
