“I Was Ugly Crying” — K-Drama Finale Sparks Tears And Mixed Feelings
Spoiler Alert
Another K-Drama has finally come to a close, and viewers have plenty to say about its heart-wrenching final episode.

The JTBC series Heavenly Ever After hit screens on April 19. This unconventional love story follows an elderly woman who is reunited with her husband in heaven after her death. In life, he told her that she grew more beautiful with time. As such, she arrives in heaven looking just like she did before she passed away.

Her husband, however, now looks like he did in his 30s, and she discovers that she’s the only person in heaven who decided not to return to her youthful appearance. She and her husband begin the next heavenly chapter of their relationship.

Although many viewers stuck with the show until the very end, not everyone was happy with the direction Heavenly Ever After went. For instance, Episode 10 triggered major backlash for crossing the line with a plot twist. It was revealed that Lee Hae Sook (Kim Hye Ja‘s character) suffered domestic abuse during her life because she killed her mother-in-law in a previous life.

The final episode, Episode 12, finally revealed the true identity of Som Yi, a mysterious woman who unexpectedly shows up in heaven one day. It turns out that she is none other than Lee Hae Sook’s younger self. And Lee’s pastor friend? He’s none other than a grown-up version of her son, Eun Ho, who suffered a tragic fate.

Som Yi and Eun Ho’s reveals were only a couple of the tear-jerking moments that led up to the show’s ending. Some viewers weren’t happy about Lee’s husband, Nak Joon, choosing to break the circle of rebirths that led to him and Lee falling in love each time. Others felt sorry for him and wished more time had been spent on telling his side of the story.

Other viewers pointed out that much of the focus was on Som Yi (younger Lee), when the plot summary featured Lee as the main character.
