On Eric Nam‘s podcast titled The K-Pop Daebak Show, Jessi appeared as a guest, and talked about a bunch of different things!

One of the topics that came up was how Jessi had been active in Korea for 15, almost 16 years as a singer.

While the two talked about their journies and struggles of being Korean American signers in Korea, Jessi revealed that she almost gave up on her career when she was 20 years old.

I didn’t know who I was at 15 years old. I didn’t know if being a singer is what I wanted to do, or be an entertainer. It just happened to be like that.

I remember the time after, I think I was 19 or 20, when I gave up my career.

Eric Nam expressed surprise at this, and asked her what she meant!

Wait, what do you mean you gave up your career?!

And Jessi detailed the reason why she almost packed up and gave her career up at the time.

I wasn’t accepted in Korea. It’s very hard to explain this. But I had so much potential. Everyone was like, “Jess, you’re gonna make it, you’re gonna do well.”

But I didn’t feel accepted here. Even now, to this day, I feel like an alien.

People think I’m weird.

But I’m not weird, I’m just different [from them].

Jessi initially debuted in 2005, with the song “Get Up”. After taking a break from the industry for around 5 years, she returned as a member of the trio Lucky J, and later found further success as a solo artist.
