“Resident Playbook” Jung Joon Won Directly Responds To Hate About His Visuals

Actor Jung Joon Won successfully pulled off the role of Gu Do Won on Resident Playbook recently. The character received much love from fans, with many supporting his onscreen relationship with Oh Yi Young (played by Go Youn Jung.)
Despite the success and popularity of the series, Jung Joon Won was unexpectedly hit with criticism about not his acting, but his visuals. Netizens on X had been harsh about the “visual disparity” between him and Go Youn Jung, citing that it made their pairing unbelievable.

In a recent interview, he addressed the hate directly. Jung Joon Won revealed that prior to being officially cast, the script did not indicate a romantic development between his character and Oh Yi Young. When he found out, it got him worried.
“When I found out about the love line, I was happy but also very worried. I’m pretty self-aware, so I wondered, ‘Would viewers really buy that Yi Young likes Do Won?’ I even asked the director early on, ‘Do you think this is okay?’ and he gave me a lot of encouragement. He told me to act with confidence.”
He later came to realize that much of the believability was down to his own skills.
“As I got deeper into the role, I realized Do Won was a bit of a fantasy character. I started to think, ‘Do people like this even exist?’ But if I could portray him well, I believed I could make the audience buy into it. I honestly expected the visual disparity comments before we even started. It didn’t hurt my feelings because I knew they were coming. But I also believed opinions could change over time. You have to have that hope and confidence — otherwise, what’s the point? Some people will like it, and some won’t.”
Resident Playbook aired its final episode on May 18, 2025. The drama followed a group of young residents growing into their roles as doctors and individuals.
