One of the judges, Mike Song, asked J.Y. Park about one of the contestants.

Do you know about Marlee?

— Mike Song

He responded, unaware of the dancer.

No, who’s that?

— J.Y. Park

Mike Song then explained her current popularity level.

She’s been making a lot of noise right now.

— Mike Song

He also went on to tell to him the stories of the other contestants and the hype surrounding them.

Kyoka is… she’s a beast.

— Mike Song

This moment gained attention online, where viewers debated if the judges should learn about the contestants of the show beforehand to be prepared to judge them properly.

But don’t judges usually get information about the contestants beforehand?
I mean, sure, if it were a regular battle, fine — but this is a broadcast show.
Is it really okay for a judge to not know who the dancers are and have to ask the person next to them during the show?

However, many were in favor of J.Y. Park’s decision to not learn about the dancers prior to the show. By doing this, he can remain fair and only judge them by their performance skills they show on the stage, not by their legacy or presence online.

  • “I don’t know who he is, but as long as he judges the dancing properly, that’s all that matters.”
  • “If you’re not actively dancing, it’s hard to remember all those dancers’ names… but I will say, he’s been judging pretty well.”
  • “Do you really have to know all the dancers to judge them?? Isn’t it enough to just evaluate the dancing?”
  • “Isn’t it actually more fair if they only focus on the dancing?”
  • “Exactly — that way, they won’t have any bias toward individual dancers.”
