Korean Man Charged For Attempting To Murder Thai Girlfriend After She Refuses Sex

His sentence was surprisingly short.

A Korean man in his 50s who assaulted his cohabiting partner, causing her to fall from a third-floor window, was sentenced to prison for assault resulting in injury, not attempted murder. According to legal sources on December 1, 2025, the Criminal Division 1 of the Tongyeong Branch of the Changwon District Court, acquitted 50-year-old A of the attempted murder charge, instead finding him guilty of assault causing injury and sentencing him to three years in prison.

A was charged with assaulting his cohabiting partner B (a woman in her 40s) at their home in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, last July, leading to her fall from a third-floor window. According to the indictment, A met B, a Thai national residing illegally in Korea, in 2021 and continued dating her before they began living together in March of this year.

A repeatedly demanded sex from B, exploiting the fact that she could not legally work, was financially dependent on him, and, if reported, could be deported. On the day of the incident, A allegedly returned home drunk and demanded sex again. When B refused, he became enraged and punched her in the face multiple times. When B tried to avoid him, A struck her with dangerous objects, including a table and a clothing rack pole, eventually causing her to lose consciousness. After regaining consciousness, B pleaded with him to stop but A followed her into the bedroom. B fell from the third-floor window and suffered multiple rib fractures and other injuries requiring more than three months of treatment.

Prosecutors argued that A staged the scene to make it appear as if B had jumped out of the window on her own to conceal his crime. However, the court rejected this claim.

“B consistently testified from the investigative stage through trial that she remembers being assaulted but has no memory of how she fell from the window. Considering her limited Korean listening, comprehension, and speaking abilities, it is difficult to conclude that the defendant pushed B out of the window with intent to kill.”

However, the court held A responsible for assault causing injury, noting that his violent actions with dangerous objects and pursuit induced fear in B, ultimately leading to her fall, and imposed a prison sentence.
