Top Star Couple Finally Comes Clean About Their “Shotgun Wedding” 18 Years Later

They even shared how they kept the pregnancy hidden.

When Korea’s top stars Kwon Sang Woo and Son Tae Young got married in 2008, the Korean press got vicious, suspecting premarital pregnancy and screaming “shotgun wedding.” Fast forward 18 years, and the couple finally opened up about their relationship, their firstborn, and all that happened in between.

People think it was an unexpected pregnancy, but I’d always said that if a baby came along, we should get married quickly…

…One morning, Son Tae Young called me saying something big had happened and that she was pregnant, but I just started laughing. I knew this would happen.

However, the couple couldn’t reveal the news of their pregnancy to the public. Kwon Sang Woo recalled, “Back then, it was rare for a famous actor to get married at such a young age of 33.” That, along with Son Tae Young struggling with malicious comments she was getting about the relationship, made Kwon Sang Woo deny the pregnancy, even taking criticism upon himself, in order to protect his wife.

After our relationship went public, I was mentally exhausted from malicious comments. I hated the idea that if people found out I was pregnant, our love would look like it was only because of the baby…

…This was our precious child, but I hated that it was being framed as a ‘shotgun wedding.’ I was so stressed I felt like I might collapse.

— Son Tae Young

After “lying” about the pregnancy, Kwon Sang Woo and Son Tae Young went so far as to getting their OB-GYN check-ups in New York to avoid rumors. Now a proud dad of two children, Kwon Sang Woo laughed looking back, “I even wore a hairpiece on the plane so people wouldn’t recognize me. Looking back now, it was pure comedy.”
