“When Life Gives You Tangerines” Lands Jeju Island A Historic Deal With Netflix
On May 16, KST, officials at Hyangsadang in Jeju City signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Netflix and Jeju Province to boost content based on the region. This decision came after the global success of When Life Gives You Tangerines.

The agreement is aimed at creating and promoting content centered around Jeju’s local spirit, landscapes, and history. The Jeju government will streamline collaboration across public offices to support Netflix’s productions based in the region.
Jeju governor Oh Young Hoon and Netflix Asia-Pacific’s head of content, Kim Min Young, both hailed this decision as mutually beneficial for the region and the streaming platform.
Netflix’s 2025 global hit When Life Gives You Tangerines has not only achieved commercial success, but also become a cultural phenomenon for its heartfelt presentation of a mature story intertwined with the way of life on Jeju Island. From highlighting the plight of Jeju’s iconic Haenyeos, to upholding the value of community in the different societies across the island, it is undeniable that When Life Gives You Tangerines was elevated because of its authentic Jeju flavor.
The show ranked in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for non-English series across 42 countries almost immediately after its release, standing testament to its global appeal, despite its local storytelling. This new partnership between Netflix and Jeju Island is expected to bring more such heartwarming stories to life.
