For a while now, MONSTA X have been rumored to collaborate with Canadian music artist The Weeknd.
Where did this rumor originate from? Does anyone really know?
Some MONBEBEs (fans of MONSTA X) had shared edited and fake news headlines that “announced” the collaboration. They would then drop a supposed link to the article, and instead, it would be to an entirely different website to vote for MONSTA X. In this case, it was the 2021 MTV Europe Music Awards voting. Basically, if you have time to look at rumors, you have time to vote for MONSTA X (honestly, not a bad idea). It might be better than being “Rickrolled.”

There is one legitimate article published by Music Mundial from back in October that briefly mentioned a potential collaboration with The Weeknd. So, this may be the source of the rumor circulating within the fandom, but what exactly is the source of the source?
We do know that MONSTA X are releasing their second English album, THE DREAMING, on December 10. And, we couldn’t be more excited.
Patiently waiting for 'THE DREAMING'… In the meantime, stream #ONEDAY 🎶

We’re, of course, automatically assuming that it will include some awesome collaborations, too, as their first English album ALL ABOUT LUV included many legendary collabs. Does anyone else remember when we had “WHO DO YOU LOVE??” with French Montana and “BESIDE U” with Pitbull repeat? We actually still have all of the songs on repeat…
Now, MONSTA X have finally addressed the rumors themselves. In an interview with CNN-News18‘s Shipa Rathnam, they were asked if there were any other artists they want to collaborate with. Kihyun replied, “Justin Timberlake, for me!” They and Shipa agreed that their voices would sound so good together!
She then followed up the question. “Why is there rumor about your collaboration with The Weeknd? Where did that rumor come from?” Immediately, the group, specifically I.M, exclaimed, “Really? Really?!” Hmm…
Eventually, members gave individual responses. They certainly seem to be avoiding the question, though.
I.M: Rumor? Wish that could come true.
Minhyuk: That rumor is rumor.
The interviewer decided to leave it at that, saying, “For now, for now, anything could happen in the coming few months or days, but rumor for now.” But, Joohoney added one last thing…
We hope so!
MONBEBEs couldn’t ignore how suspicious their reaction to the question was…

For one thing… Whenever they have been asked about collaborations in the past, Joohoney always says his iconic “Call me!” when speaking about specific artists. This time was different.
okay but the collab is happening bc jooheon is so suspiciously silent like if it werent true mans would have been like "OH MY GOD THE WEEKND, CALL ME." with his phone gesture 👁️ https://t.co/tjIIViCRxs

If MONSTA X are really trying to convince us it’s not happening, they sure are doing a poor job. Just a day after the interview was released, I.M and Kihyun played “In Your Eyes” on Naver NOW‘s Midnight Idol.
Monsta x stop making me anticipate this collab with The Weeknd when it’s not even happening challenge 😭 pic.twitter.com/0YuBqHc4hn

So, while it’s definitely not confirmed yet, we can’t deny there definitely seems to be something going on here. Besides, it would be a dream come true as the members have been fans of The Weeknd for a while now.
