NewJeans’s Music Video For “Ditto” Is Hit With “Plagiarism” Accusations, But It’s Not What You Think — Director Responds In A Statement

The director denied any plagiarism took place.

Netizens are saying NewJeans’s latest music video for “Ditto” is very similar with another famous group.

On December 19, arguably K-Pop’s fastest-rising group, NewJeans’ released the music video for the group’s much-anticipated comeback, “Ditto.”

Almost immediately upon release, the song skyrocketed on the charts, placing first on most of Korea’s music charts. Netizens raved about the song, as well as the music video.

The music video shows the members playing in school with a friend, who some netizens believe represents the group’s fans.

As much as fans were touched by the symbolism, some couldn’t help but notice that the music video reminded them of another group.

A post authored on December 20 has since gone viral. The post titled, “I thought NewJeans’s music video looked familiar...” reveals stills of the group’s music video that looks very similar to one of Korea’s all-time favorite group of comedians, Infinite Challenge!

Netizens couldn’t get enough of the pictures. Fans celebrated the coincidence writing it was amazing how even after all these years of being off-air, Infinite Challenge finds a way to make people laugh.

Due to the viral post, the director of the music video himself released a statement, jokingly denying any plagiarism took place.

I heard that NewJeans’s ‘Ditto’ music video was accused of plagiarising Infinite Challenge. I would like to take this opportunity to state that it isn’t plagiarism. If there are similarities, please understand they are due to being of the (two projects) being of the same genre.

Infinite Challenge is one of Korea’s most beloved television shows of all time. The show, led by Yoo Jae Suk, ran from 2006 to 2018 and is largely responsible for making celebrities such as Jung Joon Ha, Noh Hong Chul, Jung Hyun Dong, Park Myung Soo, and HaHa, household names.
