Why Does NewJeans’ “Super Shy” Sound So Familiar? They Might Have Sampled A TV Show’s Theme Song
NewJeans recently made their comeback with their 2nd EP Get Up, including the song “Super Shy.” Yet again, NewJeans released another easy-listening bop that you can’t help but dance to.
While NewJeans’ music feels like a breath of fresh air, there is still no denying that there was something vaguely familiar about “Super Shy.” That’s because it sounds like at least three other songs…
Korean American pop/R&B artist Hojean recently responded to comments that NewJeans’ “Super Shy” and his 2020 song “Over 85” sounded similar. He felt flattered, and honestly, we kind of need a “Jean x Jeans” collab now.
@yihojean #duet with @ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ jean meet up soon i hope ! #hojean #newjeans #supershy
The next song is from… a few decades ago. The music, specifically drums and percussion, in “Super Shy” sounds like a slowed-down version of American musician James Brown‘s 1970 song “Funky Drummer.”
The same can be said about The Powerpuff Girls theme song. It sounds like NewJeans sampled the original 1998 animated show’s theme song for “Super Shy.”
Of all the songs, The Powerpuff Girls theme song was likely sampled since NewJeans actually collaborated with the Cartoon Network superhero. The NewJeans members even have their own Powerpuff Girl-style counterparts and you can buy a “POWERPUFF GIRLS x NJ BOX” physical EP.
