Not Actress Material? — Red Velvet’s Irene Sparks Heated Debate
Red Velvet leader Irene has sparked a heated debate online over her eligibility as an actress.

The discourse sparked after Irene recently told fans that she was at her label, going to attend a class.

A curious netizen reposted the messages, wondering if she was talking about acting classes. Though there have been no concrete hints about Irene working on any acting projects currently, the post caught the attention of Korean netizens, making it go viral.
As comments poured in, a large number of them expressed that Irene was “too old” to venture into acting, and that she should have taken up opportunities while Red Velvet was still early in their idol career. Some also pointed out that her height was shorter than what is the industry standard now for actresses.

- “She doesn’t have the face of an actress. Plus, actresses need to be tall.”
- “She would do it if she wanted to.”
- ” She’s too short…. Even if you’re short, it’s fine if your proportions are good, but her proportions are also…”

- “Actresses around her age do seem to be more glamorous.”
- “It’s too late.”
These comments immediately ticked off international fans, who highlighted how hypocritical it was to police Irene over her age when male actors almost twice her age are doing well in their careers and playing main roles.

Notably, Irene has already made her debut as an actress, in a 2016 web drama called Women at a Game Company. After receiving positive reviews for her portrayal of Ahreum in the show, she made her movie debut in the 2021 movie, Double Patty, in the lead role. It remains to be seen whether she decides to dabble further into acting or not.
