Rapper San E bravely speaks his mind about the current political scandal in Korea with his new song Bad X (Bad Year).
On November 24th, San E released Bad X (Bad Year) as a teaser track for his upcoming album. The song was written about the feelings of a man and woman right before a break-up.
However, upon closer look at the lyrics, it becomes clear that the song doesn’t specifically signify a couple. Netizens dissected the lyrics and speculated that it represented criticisms toward the current state of their nation. Specific phrases such as “Will you hurry and come down,” “You’re just a puppet, a marionette is all,” “Ha…ya, I didn’t trust you to become like this,” were included.
In an update, San E’s management agency Brand New Music explained that the track is open for analysis. Talking to Sports Chosun, it was revealed, “We are aware that the song isn’t just about a break-up. San E has included into the song what he has always wanted to express without any limitations. We will leave it up to the fans to interpret what they think the meaning behind the lyrics truly is.“
San E received positive comments for his use of word play in his lyrics. Others have praised him for summing up the nation’s feelings masked into a soothing love song.
Here are a few examples:
- The part with “Ha… Ya,” which means “Hey… You” is a pun on the Korean word “Haya.” The term that means resignation or to resign.
- The title of the song in Korean is “Bad X” and a rough translation for the title would be “Bad Bxxxh.”
- The English title is “Bad Year.” The term “year” is another pun on the word “bxxxh” as it implicates the same meaning for the Korean word, “nyeon.”
- The part with “The year of the monkey“, which is pronounced, “byungshin-nyeon“, is yet another pun on the Korean words that mean, “dumb*ss bxxxh.”
The lyrics were welcome to the Korean citizens who remained vigilant with the alleged corruption scandal against their President. Just last week, at least one million Korean citizens gathered in protest for her resignation. San E’s lyrics tackled these motions on his latest track.
“Bad X (Bad Year)” will be included in his full album scheduled to be released next month.
