SISTAR’s Hyolyn Mistaken For Black Woman Due To “Dark” Tan
Today, SISTAR‘s Hyolyn released her new digital single “Wait” and music video. The song is an Afrobeats track, perfect for the summer.
The MV was filmed in Siquijor and Bohol, Philippines. She earned praise from Filipino fans for showcasing the country’s beauty.
Hyolyn is also known to be naturally tan. Yet, since it’s a summer concept, she got even more tanned.
A fancam on TikTok of Hyolyn dancing to her new song has circulated, and it’s received mixed reactions due to her appearance. Since the video begins showing Hyolyn from the back as she twerked, her face is not visible at first.
Netizens confessed they didn’t recognize her initially and were judging based on skin color. Her tan was so dark that some mistook her for Black women, such as BLACKSWAN‘s Fatou or JAM REPUBLIC‘s Latrice Kabamba.
Realizing it was Hyolyn, netizens were shocked to see how tan she had gotten.
On Instagram, netizens admired Hyolyn’s tan. Many praised her for her natural beauty and for not conforming to the stereotypical Korean beauty standards of being pale.
Yet, on X (formerly Twitter), netizens criticized Hyolyn for Blackfishing, which is the act of a non-Black person attempting to appear Black, and cultural appropriation, which is adopting elements of another culture to often exploit or profit from them.
I thought this was a new black pop star and then she turned around and it was hyolyn…one thing she gon do is keep a tan on her and try to steal a sound from a black pop girl 😭😭😭 https://t.co/xdRVVIm61a
