Taekwondo Demonstration Team Receives Golden Buzzer On “America’s Got Talent” After Being Unable To Perform At The Olympics
The Korean quartet, known as Korean Soul, recently earned a standing ovation and a spot competing on America’s Got Talent. Now, World Taekwondo Demonstration Team, consisting of persons worldwide, including South Korea and the United States, has auditioned for the show and completely blown away the judges.
On the third night of auditions, World Taekwondo Demonstration Team revealed in their introduction that they had to turn down an invitation from the Tokyo Olympics due to COVID-19, so they were hoping America’s Got Talent would be an alternative opportunity for them.
Since the start of the audition, the judges were impressed by their athletic abilities! The team demonstrated flips, high jumps and kicks, and splitting wooden boards.
Each team member was skilled in the martial art individually, but all together, they proved they were skilled in coordination as well. Moreover, they communicated a message that they were better together.
There was one moment, however, that had everyone in the building in shock. One of the Taekwondoins jumped at least three yards in the air while simultaneously chopping risen slabs of wood with their feet.
If that was not enough, he then did it again while backflipping! Host Terry Crews, who has been a bodybuilder and professional football player, said that he had never seen anything like it before.
The rest of the team soon joined in splitting wood slabs while backflipping, causing pieces of wood to fly everywhere. Even past the judges’ table!
For the team’s final trick, a member ran up from a human ramp and jumped to about the height of about two stories to do a backflip-kick, splitting another piece of wood. They’re like real-life superheroes with their abilities!
They ended their audition by bringing out banners, including one with a message that read, “Peace is more precious than Triumph.” The judges and crowd erupted with applause, giving them a standing ovation.
Model and designer Heidi Klum got up from her seat at the end to pick up the slap of wood that had made its way past the judge’s table. She confessed, “I had goosebumps!”
Howie Mandel had shared that his daughter has a blackbelt in Taekwondo, so he recognized firsthand the hard work that goes into the martial art. He was truly amazed by the audition, saying he, too, had never seen anything like it.
I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. The discipline that is involved, the message that you have— amazing!
— Howie Mandel
Actress Sofía Vergara added, “It’s a big show, and I know what it takes to be able to achieve this.” She also found the audition to be pure perfection!
Finally, Simon Cowell revealed that even as a veteran of television competition talent shows, it was one of the best things he had seen in all of his years working.
I think what you did was one of the most extraordinary things I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been on America’s Got Talent.
— Simon Cowell
When the judges were going to vote, Terry Crews came down from the stage. He chose to give no more time for discussion because, in his mind, without a doubt, World Taekwondo had already won. As a result, he gave them the Golden Buzzer, automatically sending the team to the live shows.
I gotta tell you, I have never, ever seen anything like this in my life. World Taekwondo, this is not about fighting. It’s about courage. It’s about confidence and respect. And I respect what you guys did out here today. Like no one else. And, you know, you were not able to make it to the Olympics and get a gold medal, but I am going to give you something golden right now!
— Terry Crews
While the World Taekwondo Demonstration Team, unfortunately, could not attend the Tokyo Olympics, they have definitely made another great achievement.
