The One Scandal Yoo Jae Suk Will Never Get Caught In

“Maybe this is why he’s lasted so long…”

A video shared via tax accountant Yoon Na Gyeom on her TaxTV YouTube channel has since gone viral, revealing the reason that TV star Yoo Jae Suk would never find himself in a tax-related scandal.

In the video, the accountant explains that Korean celebrities are categorized as sole proprietors and have two options for filing their taxes: Bookkeeping or standard expense rate. According to her, “bookkeeping filing” means hiring an accountant to record the income and expenses, calculate deductions, and maximize tax benefits. On the other hand, “standard expense rate filing” is a more straightforward method that calculates taxes based on fixed rates set by the government. While easier, Yoon noted, the standard expense rate filing method usually results in paying more tax.

Unlike most celebrities, who choose the first option, the accountant revealed that Yoo Jae Suk chooses the second. The accountant explained:

Let’s say someone earned ₩10.0 billion KRW (about $7.17 million USD). They would pay about ₩2.70 billion KRW (about $1.94 million USD) in taxes with bookkeeping. But using Yoo Jae Suk’s simplified method, he would pay ₩4.10 billion KRW (about $2.94 million USD)— essentially about ₩1.40 billion KRW (about $1.00 million USD) more.

As for why, Yoon guessed, “Given his reputation as a popular TV star, he must be avoiding tax controversies.” While Yoo Jae Suk’s method isn’t for everyone, the accountant noted how it has left Yoo Jae Suk scandal free from tax audits.

A scandal free tax record earns the fans’ trust and elevates his reputation. It also saves time and energy, removes the stress of record-keeping, and eliminates the risk of tax audits.

Yoo Jae Suk’s method isn’t right for everyone, but in the long run, reputation and trust can be more valuable. The fact that Yoo Jae Suk never got flagged in an audit shows he wasn’t even claiming questionable expenses. From an accountant’s point of view, he doesn’t just have no additional taxes due — he could even be eligible for refunds.

In fact, in 2024, Yoo Jae Suk went through an intensive tax audit at the time, no intentional evasion or underreporting was found. With a clean record, he remains one of the most influential figures in the Korean entertainment business!

  • “Wow. That could not be easy to do. He’s so cool.”
  • “This is the hardest thing to do, like… Most people try so hard to pay less and then end up with additional taxes later. LOL.”
  • “Usually, rich people try to cut taxes using unthinkable ways…”
  • “Not being obsessed with money is really admirable.”
  • “Wow.”
  • “Amazing.”
  • “Maybe this is why he’s lasted so long without a single controversy. Impressive.”
  • “So cool!”
  • “Wow… I’ve never seen anyone handle taxes like that before, seriously. Most self-employed or sole proprietors use bookkeeping, but he just went with simplified filing. For me, paying ₩56.0 million KRW (about $40,100 USD) in taxes all at once would be too much, so I file bookkeeping and end up paying like ₩500,000 KRW (about $358 USD).
  • “Wow… He’s just an incredible person.”
