A plot twist, when done right, can elevate a story and make it difficult to forget. When done wrong, a plot twist can still immortalize a story, but for all the wrong reasons. On Reddit, K-Drama viewers discussed their least favorite plot twists and reveals. Here are 5 of them.
1. The Flower of Evil
The Flower of Evil follows a man with a mysterious–and possibly violent–past, who suddenly finds himself playing cat-and-mouse games with his police detective wife.
This 2020 series received critical acclaim, but not everybody loved the amnesia that seemed to come out of nowhere in the show’s final episode. Some viewers felt that this last-minute plot twist was “cruel and unnecessary,” and it made the ending feel rushed.
2. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is a romantic comedy about a penniless pianist and the part-timer who comes into her life at the right time.
For some viewers, this otherwise heartwarming series was soured by a terminal illness reveal, an age gap reveal, and the male lead’s decision to fake his own death… for five years.
3. What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?
This series follows a vice-chairman whose entire world is thrown out of orbit when his secretary of nine years decides to quit.
This romantic comedy was one of the most highly praised K-Dramas of 2018… but was that childhood PTSD plot twist really necessary? Some thought it wasn’t needed, but others though at least it has some reason for existing.
4. Penthouse (Seasons 1 – 3)
Most K-Dramas only get one season: Penthouse got three, and each one was more outlandish than the last. This show follows the intertwined lives of the poisonous, wealthy residents who reside in the Hera Palace apartment complex.
From faked deaths to doppelgangers, some of Penthouse‘s reveals were just too absurd for these viewers to accept.
5. Because This is My First Life
What happens when a socially awkward IT employee and a broke writer agree to a marriage of convenience? Love, romantic antics–and a plot twist that rubbed some viewers the wrong way.
In most romance K-Dramas, the leads get their fairy tale ending. In Because This is My First Life, the main couple does end up together…after a sudden, messy breakup, and miscommunications that ruined the show for some fans.
