During the show, when discussing the boy group pre-debut days, G-Dragon shared that the group’s hit song “Lies” was originally intended as a solo track.
At the time, [YG] Hyunsuk hyung, who was our CEO back then, suggested we make it a BIGBANG song. I thought, ‘This is about my own story… how do I explain it? If it doesn’t do well, is it my fault?’ It was really stressful.

He added that after the song’s success, YG began appreciating his self-composed tracks, which was a relief after a period of frequent criticism. G-Dragon says its thanks to these producing and composing skill that the boy group was able to gain any success and fame.
After ‘Lies’ became really successful, Hyunsuk hyung started smiling. He’d ask, ‘What did you write this time?’ and after hearing my self-composed songs, he said they were all good. Before that, we got scolded so much.

G-Dragon also reflected on the scrutiny the group faced when they first debuted, saying he felt like they were criticized for no reason. He emphasized that the group’s ability to produce their own music played a major role in their breakthrough.
If you look at Daesung, you can see why we succeeded. We had to be a group with real talent. When BIGBANG first debuted, we got so much hate for no reason. People said our visuals broke the definition of an idol, so we had to have real talent. If we didn’t even have the skills, we wouldn’t have made it.
Fortunately, what we could rely on was our ability to produce music ourselves. And miraculously, the public started responding to it.
