New K-Dramas Can’t Stop Ruining Romantic Comedies, According To Viewers
Spoiler Alert
Whether you love mysteries, fantasy, or heart-pounding thrillers, there’s a K-Drama for everyone. Even so, some viewers are becoming disappointed with today’s romantic comedies.

The rom-com genre promises viewers fluffy, feel-good romance, laughter, and a happy ending. Some K-dramas, however, have not lived up to those promises.
On Reddit, K-Drama fans expressed their excitement for Dynamite Kiss, a new romantic comedy that began airing on November 12. These fans are hoping that this new show will “remain fluffy till the end,” like Business Proposal and King the Land, instead of dramatically changing the story with “a random murder side plot.”

Some Korean romantic comedies have been criticized for adding heavy subject matter, such as serial killers and cancer diagnoses. For instance, in 2020’s like Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol, there was a terminal illness reveal, and the male lead decided to fake his own death…for five years.
The 2025 rom-com Would You Marry Me? tells the story of a fake husband and wife who pretend to be married in order to fool a house inspector. This isn’t the kind of story you would expect a disturbing murder to be in, and yet…it’s there.
Why do kdrama romcoms always have that random serial killer subplot?

So, why do murder mysteries and serial killers keep wandering out of crime thrillers and into rom-coms? Some viewers believe these side plots are used to increase tension, give the male lead excuses to protect the female lead, or attract a broader audience.
