Man Who Didn’t Leave His Room For Half A Decade Helps Korea’s Isolated Youth
After spending nearly 5 years confined to his room in his 20s, You Jin Kyu is now helping socially withdrawn young Koreans reconnect with the world.

According to BBC, the problem of young South Koreans choosing to self-isolate from society has become increasingly rampant.

Once struggling with extreme isolation, You Jin Kyu turned his painful past into purpose, launching “Not Scary Company,” a social enterprise that runs share houses in Seoul for reclusive youth. The houses offer safe spaces where residents relearn daily routines, from cooking to conversation, guided by mentors who have also experienced isolation.

The company now extends beyond housing, providing family counselling, educational programs, and policy advice to tackle Korea’s growing social withdrawal crisis, estimated to affect over 540,000 young adults.

Recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, You Jin Kyu’s team has helped shape national recovery guidelines, inspiring similar centers across the country.

Many have praised him online as a “wounded healer” by using his own experience with hardships to help others.
