Smuggling Drugs? The Truth Behind 2NE1 Park Bom’s Nearly Career-Ending Scandal

Recently, 2NE1‘s Park Bom made startling accusations against her group mates and former company.

In a now-deleted post, Park Bom claimed that her past “drug scandal” was actually her being used as a scapegoat to hide Sandara Park’s drug issues.

She mentions that it involved her being medicated for ADD/ADHD, and the medication she took, but some might wonder exactly how the “drug scandal” took place.

In 2014, it was revealed that Bom had once been under investigation for “smuggling” drugs in 2010, resulting in YG Entertainment’s Yang Hyun Suk addressing the situation in a long letter.

The idol had been under investigation for smuggling 80 Adderall tablets into Korea by having her family members in the U.S. mail them to her. Adderall is a prescription central nervous system stimulant containing amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, and is used to increase dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, improving focus, attention, and impulse control.

The drug is prescribed to those with ADD/ADHD and narcolepsy.  Due to its chemical makeup and recreational uses, Adderall is (and was) considered a controlled substance, and is completely banned from entering Korea, unless an application for a permit through Narcotics Korea is submitted in advance.

In the statement issued by YG Entertainment, the company claimed that Bom was not able to visit her physician in America and had been receiving treatment for her ADD/ADHD in both Korea and the United States, with the latter producing better results. During the investigation, Bom provided medical documents showing her diagnosis and treatment plan from her U.S physician.

Bom’s image took a hit as netizens accused her of having preferential treatment, though YG Entertainment denied it, and she entered a hiatus. The idol left her position on the show Roommate, and only returned to the stage in December 2015 at the 2015 MAMA Awards to perform with 2NE1.
