Here’s Why TWICE’s “What Is Love?” Won “Song Of The Year” at MAMA 2018

All their hard work was recognized.

While haters may say that TWICE didn’t deserve to win the “Song of the Year” award at MAMA 2018 and have even said that it all comes down to popularity, they couldn’t be more wrong. The “Song of the Year” award is one of the most impressive awards to be handed out at the awards show and it’s judging is quite unique.

Since the award was initially created in 2006, only three artists have ever been the recipients of it more than once. BIGBANG and 2NE1 have each taken home the award two times while TWICE just won it for the third year in a row.

BIGBANG took home the award in 2007 and 2015 while 2NE1 won in 2009 and 2011.

But what exactly makes this award so special? Well, for starters, the honor isn’t based on popularity or album sales. In fact, that only makes up a very small portion of what goes into judging a song for this special honor.

According to the official criteria found on Mnet‘s website, sales of the album account for 10%, charting accounts for 30%, and online voting through Mwave is 20%.

While a small portion of the award does take into account the album sales, the majority of the vote actually comes from expert MAMA judges who have their own set of criteria. They don’t look at the charts or album sales, instead, they base their decision on technical proficiency and overall excellence.

The judges’ decisions make up 40% of the award.

In fact, the award is often quoted as being “given in honor of artistic achievement, technical proficiency, and overall excellence in the recording industry without regard to album sales or chart position in the music industry.”

And since the greatest majority of the decision is based on this, winning this award is a huge honor because it means the artists are being recognized for their excellence in the music industry!

So when TWICE snagged their third consecutive “Song of the Year” award with “What Is Love?” at MAMA 2018, everyone can rest assured that not only was is a huge achievement but also a very well-deserved one.

Congratulations once again TWICE on winning the very prestigious award!
