When her production staff commented about her vision (and how “bad” it is), Tzuyang clarified that it has always been that way because of her condition: retinitis pigmentosa.

My vision has been like this since elementary school. It’s not because of using the computer a lot or whatever—it’s because I have an incurable eye disease. People always ask why I don’t get LASIK or LASEK surgery, saying it’s really convenient, but I can’t. It’s because I have retinitis pigmentosa.

She then added, lightheartedly, that she could go blind later in life. In fact, another Korean celebrity—comedian Lee Dong Woo—did lose his vision due to the same condition. When the production staff was left speechless, Tzuyang sweetly smiled and moved on.

Retinitis pigmentosa, the condition Tzuyang suffers from, is a hereditary disease in which pigment builds up in the retina—the part of the eye that converts light into electrical signals—causing loss of retinal function.
