Two Groups That Avoided Controversy At “2025 MAMA Awards” By Changing Their Performance
The 2025 MAMA Awards took place amidst much concern and controversy due to the recent fires in Hong Kong. The show proceeded in a solemn and smaller-scaled manner out of respect for the lives lost in the tragedy.
Prior to the show, many had been worried about the artists’ performances. One group in particular, MEOVV, was singled out. Their hit song “BURNING UP” was scheduled to be performed. The lyrics however, with emphasis on the words “burning up,” were inappropriate for the situation.

The girls dealt with it like a pro! During the show, they replaced it with “turning up” instead. Narin and Gawon made sure to sing “turning up” loudly to avoid any controversy.

On the other hand, i-dle also similarly dealt with their performance professionally. When performing “Good Thing,” they avoided doing the thumbs up hand gesture, a signature move in the choreography. Yuqi also avoided saying the line “it is such a good thing.”
During i-dle’s MAMA 2025 performance, Yuqi & Shuhua skipped singing the “Good Thing” parts of the song and didn’t do the thumbs up gesture that’s part of the dance choreography, making a fist instead. This was their way of respecting the Hong Kong fire victims.#YUQI #SHUHUA pic.twitter.com/o9GTm8fIcN
