From the outside, the entertainment industry might seem glamorous, but not every actor is swimming in cash. One is working multiple jobs just to pay the bills.

Hong Kong actor Niklas Lam has appeared in over a dozen series since his acting debut in 2018, but he didn’t attract widespread attention until 2023. That year, he played a supporting role in The Queen of News, a series that was successful enough to get a sequel, The Queen of News 2.
Since entering the entertainment industry in 2017, Niklas Lam has reportedly had to work up to five part-time jobs at a time (tutoring, working for an online fashion store, group psychotherapy, and social work) to get by. He’s even considering taking a sixth job: dishwashing at a tea house.

The actor revealed that it took him years to save up for a car, and his expenses for his car alone (tolls, parking fees at his agency) totals $2,500 HKD (approximately $321 USD) a month. To balance these costs, he lives frugally and works part-time jobs. Many celebrities around the world are chauffeured to their various schedules, but according to Lan, Hong Kong actors must arrange their own travel. Hence, the car.
When we get calls in the middle of the night, it would cost more than $500 HKD ($64 USD) to travel to and from my house, so it’s more convenient to have a car.
