6 Ways GOT7’s BamBam Is Breaking Gender Stereotypes Through Fashion

He loves to “Skrrt Skrrt” and he also wears Skirt Skirts!

Now that GOT7‘s BamBam has officially finished up his first solo promotions with “riBBon”, it’s worth looking back at some of the ways he played with androgyny during this era. Here are 6 ways BamBam broke gender stereotypes through fashion:

1.  Nail Polish

Nail polish for men is becoming more and more common but no one is owning it quite like BamBam. For his recent photoshoot with GQ Korea, BamBam not only prominently rocked black nail polish but revealed a floral hand tattoo, both of which are traditionally associated with women.

2.  “Feminine” Colors

For his solo debut with “riBBon”, BamBam played around with color for what he wore onstage and in his MV. He rocked a full rainbow, including colors considered traditionally “feminine”. BamBam took colors like Pinks:

and styled them confidently in his own “BamBam” way.

3. Chunky “Grandma” Sweaters

Speaking of pinks, one of the most beloved looks from BamBam’s “riBBon” MV was what he nicknamed his “Grandma” sweater. Not only was this a more feminine cut of shirt, but it also had many holes that could be seen through. Nevertheless, BamBam rocked the look with pride.

4. “riBBons”

What would this list be if it didn’t mention the main theme of his solo debut? In a recent video discussing all his looks, BamBam mentioned that each outfit featured ribbons to match his song. Traditionally, ribbons and bows are considered girly but that didn’t matter for BamBam. One of his most popular looks among fans even featured the “lavallière” bow (sometimes termed the pussy bow) which is most often worn by women.

5. Skirts

It’s well known that BamBam loves to “skrrt skrrt” but did you know he loves skirts? In his LookBook video, BamBam revealed that he actively asked his costume designer to create a look featuring a skirt. He explained that the pastel pink outfit came about because he’d “said several times that [he wants] to wear skirts.” Later in the video, he even excitedly said “I like skirts. A lot, guys!”

6. Blouses

BamBam played with androgyny and gender a lot during his promotions for “riBBon” and one way he did this was through combining suits with blouses. The most obvious example of this is his floral suit which was combined with a shear pink blouse with a bow. BamBam even expressed a love for blouse  and it’s bow because “If [he] ties this, it looks cute. If [he] untie[s] this, it looks masculine.”
