Legendary TV Show Host Collapses On His Way Back From Hospital, Passes Away

A popular Korean television personality, lovingly known as the “Popeye Ajussi,” has passed away.

Lee Sang Yong, a beloved figure in the broadcasting world, died on May 9, KST, following a cardiac arrest. He was 81 years old.

According to his agency, Emade Entertainment, Lee collapsed at around 12:45 pm while returning from his hospital appointment. He was rushed to the emergency care immediately.

Lee was best known for his long-serving role as the host of a popular entertainment program for soldiers. He made his TV debut in 1973 and frequently appeared on many entertainment shows as a panelist or guest. He rose to nationwide popularity starting in 1989 as the host of MBC‘s Stage of Friendship program for soldiers. He was the host of the show till 1996.

Lee was also known for his philanthropy. He frequently raised money for children with heart disease and helped hundreds of them. Throughout his career, he received multiple recognitions for his contribution to the entertainment industry and his philanthropy. He was even awarded the Order of Civil Merit in 1987.
