TVN Apologizes For TV Hosts’ Remarks About BTS’s Jungkook And J-Hope

TVN and Discovery have apologized for the controversy.

Dzień Dobry TVN, a Polish morning television show owned by Discovery, has apologized for an incident that received major backlash from BTS fans.

On January 28, ARMYs tweeted #dziendobrytvnisoverparty to draw attention to the show’s segment about TC Candler‘s “100 Most Handsome Faces of 2019″. Jungkook took the #1 spot on this list.

Hosts Anna Kalczyńska-Maciejowska and Andrzej Sołtysik came under fire for making remarks about Jungkookthat were deemed disrespectful at best and racist at worst.

In addition to this, J-Hope‘s photo was mistakenly shown as Jungkook’s to Polish people on the streets, to compare Poland’s beauty standards to that of the TC Candler list’s voters.

Initially, Anna Kalczyńska-Maciejowska refused to apologize for her comments. When fans reached out to her on Instagram, the host defended her opinions, stating that she personally does not find Jungkook’s appearance “masculine.”

On January 29, TVN posted an apology for the hosts’ comments in two separate statements.

One statement is posted on the TVN Facebook page.

The other appears on the official Dzień Dobry TVN website.

The Facebook apology, translated by Twitter user eibhlynn⁷ (@eibhlynn), states the following:

We would like to apologize to Mr. Jeon Jung-kook, Mr. Jung Ho-seok, other members of the band, artists and fans of K-pop and all those who were offended by the material aired on “Dzień Dobry TVN. The tone of the program was completely inconsistent with our values. Therefore, we are explaining this matter internally and will make sure that similar situations will not be repeated in the future.

The website apology, also translated by @eibhlynn, says:

TVN and Discovery apologize to Mr. Jeon Jung-kook, Mr. Jung Ho-seok, the other members, fans of BTS and K-pop, as well as all those who were offended by the material aired on “Dzień Dobry TVN” on January 28th and by the behavior of the hosts. The tone of the program doesn’t reflect the company’s values. That’s why we’ve launched an internal investigation into this matter. We assure you that we will make every effort to ensure that similar situations will not be repeated in the future.
