ENHYPEN Criticized For Not Being “Gay” Enough — Netizens Come To Their Defense

ENHYPEN were recently defended from an unexpected source of criticism.

In the world of fandom, there is something called “business gay performance,” basically where idols of the same sex engage in fanservice and skinship with each other. Many fans enjoy seeing their favorite idols display affection with each other, even outside of “shipping.”
It is not a new concept and has even been included in the plot of a BL.
This type of fanservice was the topic of a viral forum post that claimed ENHYPEN did not do enough of it. Essentially, the post criticized the members for not being “gay” enough with each other.
They really are a no-fun group. Even reading RPS (fanfiction between the members) wasn’t enjoyable, so I just stopped, and gradually lost interest.
— OP
Without debating the merits of “shipping,” this sort of opinion can be seen as dehumanizing due to reducing the members down to their interactions with each other for entertainment. It also doesn’t take into account the real relationships between the group and puts their comfort second.
Netizens defended the group, calling out the OP for the unnecessary criticism.
- I find it unpleasant when people who don’t even know ENHYPEN talk about them. If you think they’re boring, then what exactly do you find entertaining? Do they need to play extreme pranks, kiss each other, and have weird tension for it to be the kind of dynamic you want?
- There’s nothing more annoying than forced business gay performance, but you clearly don’t know anything.
- If you like obvious business gay performance and forced interactions, don’t bother. Their naturally developed dynamics are what make them great.
- You’re leaving the fandom because they don’t act ‘gay enough’? LOL, yeah, just leave.
